Culture, world conditions and history demand it…
They are two countries joined by the Eastern Mediterranean Sea; their capitals are hardly a 2-hour flight apart. There are no mutual differences or local interests that naturally separate them; and no logical reasons why they should not be strong allies. On the contrary. Cultural similarities and common interests abound.
As history and destiny would have it, Greece and Israel form the two pillars of Western Civilization. And now that nations around the globe are experiencing the tightening perimeters of interdependence, these two ancient civilizations and neighboring modern democracies are facing each other in a historic instance of common destiny.
For the first time ever, an Israeli prime minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, visited Greece in the summer of 2010. It was preceded by a visit of the prime minister of Greece, George Papandreou, who also reciprocated within weeks as did a number of Greek ministers. An Alliance is established.
Even before the ink on the signed memoranda dried, the opportunities for tourism, technology, business, trade, and a strategic defense treaty were obvious. Just as rapidly, the media easily identified the benefits for both countries.
Our “Circle” of friends aims to encourage and offer support to these opportunities, especially the technological, cultural, educational and business vistas which are wide open for the two countries. We cannot allow pettiness and prejudice to get in the way of the Alliance between Israel and Greece and the emerging prospects for peace and prosperity in the region.
