Israelis are rubbing their eyes in disbelief. Practically anyone whom they only yesterday envied for their economic vitality, sophistication and prosperity is in deep financial trouble, from Wall Street through London to Tokyo.

Energy has always been the weak link in Israel’s thriving economy. Decades of digging and drilling yielded practically no hydrocarbons at all. Israel was forced to spend 5% of its GDP buying fuel from suppliers that did not have its interests at heart, and were often unreliable. At one point for instance, Israel purchased 40% of its natural gas from Egypt. But the pipeline across the Sinai has been bombed so many times there was often not enough time between explosions to get the gas flowing again. Post-Mubarak Egypt desperately needs the money to replace lost tourism revenue, but hatred of Israel trumps all.

It is unclear what either Western governments or Western churches think they are achieving by turning a blind eye to the persecution of Christians in the Muslim world.

Να σημειωθεί ότι στο Δήμο Ιωαννιτών έχει κατατεθεί πρόταση από τον Δήμο Τιβεριάδας για αδελφοποίηση των δύο περιοχών.

Greece, hoping that a new, multi-billion dollar economic-rescue plan will be approved by the EU and the International Monetary Fund, has found a surprising new advocate: Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu. For the second day in a row, Netanyahu spoke out Thursday during a high-level diplomatic meeting on behalf of economic assistance to Greece. According to Netanyahu’s office, the Prime Minister, during his meeting with visiting French Foreign Minister Alain Juppe, called on the EU countries to help Greece in its necessary economic-recovery plan.
